Tanote Bay on Koh Tao is known for its epic snorkeling and reefs. If you’re looking for somewhere a little off the beaten track at Sairee or Mae Head, don’t miss this epic beach.
Koh Tao is my second home, I have spent months of my life on this beautiful island in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand. Of all the amazing beaches on Koh Tao, Tanote Bay Beach is one of the best, especially if you like a secluded atmosphere with fun cliff jumps. :
Below I’ll reveal what you need to know about visiting this bay, including how to get there and what to expect upon arrival, with photos and tips on what to do.
Overview and things to know
Tanote Bay is famous for its unique rock formation in the middle of the bay, surrounded by deep, clear waters and healthy corals. This rock is a prime cliff jumping spot and is approximately 5 meters high and accessible by rope ladder.
- Location: Located on the east coast of Koh Tao, about 5 km (3.1 mi) from Mae Haad Pier, you can get here by taxi or motorbike.
- Entrance fee. None
- Snorkeling. Tanote Bay is one of the best snorkeling spots on Koh Tao, especially around the big rock in the middle of the bay.
- Practical note. Due to its location, the road can be steep and difficult, so I recommend a motorcycle with proper suspension if you are driving yourself.
How to get to Tanote Bay?
To get to Tanote Bay you need a moped or taxi via my favorite and most scenic road on the island. The beach is located on the east side of Koh Tao, just north of Ao Leuk Beach.
Here are directions for the independent traveler:
- From Sairee or Mae Head, head south to the quieter village of Cha Loc.
- Continue on the road and take a left turn to Cha Lok on the road leading to Koh Tao Animal Clinic.
- This is the only road to the beach and is the main route for those going to the eastern parts of the island.
- At the first fork, continue to the left.
- Soon you will pass the mountain road leading to Love Koh Tao and West Coast & Tanote Peak and continue past it.
- Follow the signs and continue driving for about 5 minutes as you take in the stunning views of Koh Tao from the steep island hills.
- Soon you will see a steep road leading to the right, take this road and you can park for free at the bottom.
If you reach a dead end, don’t worry. This is Tanote Bay Resort. You can also park your bike here and walk directly to the beach. Parking your bike here is free.
My experience at Tanote Bay Beach and what to expect
There’s a reason this bay is there
Expect crystal clear water, white sand,
Snorkeling in Tanote Bay
Be sure to bring your own mask and respirator. Tanote Bay is a great place to check out the famous reef and marine life. Although there are decent snorkeling reefs throughout the bay, the best place for snorkeling is around the main jetty in the middle of the bay. Trust me, you won’t miss it.
Just swim and explore the underwater world. In the bay you will find schooling fish, trigger fish, anemone fish and the occasional turtle.
Hint: You can rent snorkeling equipment for about 200 THB from a nearby resort for a set on the beach.
Cliff Jumping from Granite Boulder
Perhaps the main reason adventure travelers head to Tanote Bay is the easily accessible rock formation right in the middle of the bay.
You have to swim about 20 meters in relatively shallow water and climb up to the base of the rock. From there you will notice a rope leading to the top of the rock. This is securely chained so it’s safe to climb, but it feels a bit sketchy to me.
This rock is not difficult to climb, but it is still important to be careful.I have climbed this many times over the years and the ropes have recently been changed due to the appearance (based on my last visit).
The jump itself is about 5 meters. Not a massive jump, but the crystal clear water is also 10 meters deep. Just make sure you jump south of the cliff side (left side facing the beach) and always do a depth check first.
Snorkeling and freediving in Tanote Bay
Because the water is so clear in high season, Tanote Bay is also a great place to dive in. Once you jump past the cliff, you’ll notice several boat buoys that lead down.
There is one line on 10m and one on 15m.
If you use these lines to free dive, be sure to watch out for the long tail and dive boats that frequent the bay. It is also extremely important to always free dive with a buddy.
Giant schooling fish in Koh Tao
In recent years, huge schools of Bigeye Yellow Snapper have made Tanote Bay their home.If you are a confident swimmer and snorkeler, you can usually find them a short distance from the big rock.
This school is absolutely huge, if you are a confident free diver you can swim under the school to block out the sun.
Where to stay on Koh Tao?
If you’re wondering where to stay on Koh Tao and want to be close to the main activities and beaches, choose a stay near Sairee Beach.
However, other great options include Mae Haad, or for a more secluded atmosphere, check out the southern beaches or even the east coast around Tanote Bay. Below are my top picks.
1. Jamakhiri Resort & Spa Luxury
A wonderful luxury dive resort in a quiet and secluded location on the beach of Shark Bay, away from the hustle and bustle.
2. Fandara Pool Villas Medium range
A luxury villa option for those who want their own kitchen and pool.Located on the hill to Wooden Rock Viewpoint.
3. Summer guest house Budget:
Located within walking distance of the dive shops and pubs on Saire Beach, this is the cheapest hostel option with a great atmosphere.
