Fraggle Rock is one of my favorite viewpoints on Koh Tao and it’s very easy to get to. Just a short motorbike ride from Sairee and a quick 5 minute hike will bring you to this huge rock that sits above the town for an unbeatable view Mae Haad Bay, Sairee Beach and the iconic Koh Nang Yuan.
On the way up, you’ll pass the exotic Hive, a small restaurant with great views, and the surrounding area, known as One Mountain, is a hot spot for rock climbing and sailing, but believe me, the real highlight is the epic Fraggle Rock itself Here’s everything you need to know to do one of Koh Tao’s best hikes.
Fraggle Rock. Overview:
To get to Fraggle Rock, you can either start from the main road to Old Wong Bay, turning right onto the side street opposite the Mango Bay turnoff, or take a motorbike up the same steep road to Exotic Beehive. a shorter campaign.
- Hike from Hin Wong Bay Road1 km 75 m high, it takes about 15-20 minutes to reach the top.
- Walkthrough from Exotic HiveA 300m hike with 25m elevation gain that takes about 5 minutes from Exotic Hive.
- Difficulty: Easy
- Entrance feeTHB 100 per person, pay at The Hive (includes entry to Fraggle Rock and nearby bamboo viewing).
- Views:Mae Haad Bay, Sairee Beach and the northern tip of Koh Nang Yuan
How to get to the Trailhead?
Fraggle Rock is easy to access whether you’re on foot or on a scooter. From Sairee, you’ll pass the turnoff to Mango Bay on the left, looking for the ‘Exotic beehive” sign.
Continue on this road on foot or scooter for about 700 meters until you reach the Exotic Hive restaurant. This road is mostly closed but quite steep. I noticed some signs warning cyclists before the very steep parts to only have one person on a bike. all the way.
You will soon arrive at the Hive Restaurant. You will pay an entrance fee of 100 THB at this restaurant and then pass through the colorful gates to the “Mountain of One”.
Journey to Fraggle Rock from the Exotic Hive
Once you enter the gates of Mt. Meke, you’ll encounter some great spots for scrambling and rock climbing. Be sure to ask the Hive owners for more information on climbing routes and equipment rentals if you’re interested.
To walk up to Fraggle Rock, you will first pass a huge boulder. On the left, there is a wooden staircase that leads to the rock overlook. AllTrails lists this as the end of the Fraggle Rock Trail, but it’s not actually Fraggle Rock. Still, this bamboo platform offers a fantastic view over Sairee with glimpses of Old Wong Bay, so it’s worth climbing up and taking a look.
You’ll want to continue to Fraggle Rock for sunset though. Keep walking and turn right into the woods. Parts of the concrete trail can be slippery due to the moss, but there are ropes tied to the trees to help you climb. it is not difficult by any means.
Soon you will reach the iconic “rabbit ears” rock formation that is Fraggle Rock.Walk through the rocks and you will be on a huge rock platform with some of the best panoramic views on Koh Tao.
My experience at Fraggle Rock For Sunset
I arrived at Fraggle Rock on a perfectly clear day and the views were incredible. From the top we could see the whole of Sairee Beach and up to Mae Haad with the huge double boulders behind Tanote Peak and West Coast Viewpoint visible in the distance.
I could also spot the southern tip of Koh Nan Yuan and its famous viewpoint hill, which makes for an amazing backdrop as the sun begins to set.
In my opinion, Fraggle Rock is the best sunset spot on Koh Tao. I even climbed some of the larger rocks behind the main lookout, although the biggest one seemed to require ropes (I noticed there were anchors for rock climbing, so that you can actually climb on Fraggle Rock too).
The views were just as stunning from there and amazingly we had the whole place to ourselves even during the busy season.
We stayed until sunset, soaking in the golden scenery, and then headed back down to drive into town for dinner at Noodle Island.
Hint: There are no lights along the trail, so I recommend bringing a flashlight or enough phone battery (even after sunset).
Where to stay on Koh Tao?
If you’re wondering where to stay on Koh Tao and want to be close to the main activities and beaches, choose a stay near Sairee Beach.
However, other great options include Mae Haad, or for a more secluded atmosphere, check out the southern beaches or even the east coast around Tanote Bay. Below are my top picks.
1. Jamakhiri Resort & Spa Luxury
A wonderful luxury dive resort in a quiet and secluded location on the beach of Shark Bay, away from the hustle and bustle.
2. Fandara Pool Villas Medium range
A luxury villa option for those who want their own kitchen and pool.Located on the hill to Wooden Rock Viewpoint.
3. Summer guest house Budget:
Located within walking distance of the dive shops and pubs on Saire Beach, this is the cheapest hostel option with a great atmosphere.
I hope this Fraggle Rock hiking guide on Koh Tao has helped you plan a visit to one of the best sunset spots on the island.
