UK ETA rolling out in 2025

The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) will be phased in next year.

From 8 January 2025, non-EU nationals must obtain an ETA to enter the UK. For a full list of applicable non-EU nationalities, see here.

From 5 March, travelers with EU passports who can enter the UK without a visa must obtain an ETA to enter the UK. For a full list of applicable EU nationalities, see here.

At this stage the ETA application process does not apply to South African passport holders who will still go through normal visa processes to visit the UK.

The UK ETA application process requires travelers to upload scans of their passports, submit a face scan and answer questions about themselves and their reasons for traveling to the UK.The application costs £10 (R228) per applicant.

Applicants receive a decision within three working days.
