How to get to Aow Leuk Beach?
While some snorkeling tours stop at Aow Leuk, the best way to get to the beach is to rent a motorbike (about 250-300 THB per day) in Sairee or Mae Haad, or by taxi , as it allows you to explore other nearby beaches as well.
To get there, start from Sair and head south on the main road to Chalok.
Before you reach Chalok, look for the road to Koh Tao Animal Clinic and turn left onto the road that goes further up Blacktip Cafe & Cowork.
Continue along this road until you reach a fork in the road past the gas station.Instead of turning left towards Tanote Bay, keep almost straight and follow the sign for Aow Leuk Beach.
The road here is well paved, concrete and not too steep by Koh Tao standards.Just after the turn you will come to a fork in the road. You will want to continue right here which leads you to the beach.
As you approach the beach, you will pass through a cleared palm area near Aow Leuk Grand Hill, where you have to pay an entrance fee of 100 THB per person, which gives you full access to the beach.
After parking your bike, you are just a few steps away from the beautiful sands and clear waters of Aow Leuk Beach.
What to expect at Aow Leuk Beach?
Aow Leuk Beach is a wide stretch of soft white sand mixed with crushed coral. The edges of this deep lagoon are lined with large boulders descending from the dense jungle. It is a very picturesque beach and contrasts beautifully with the clear, blue waters.
There are some beach chairs available from the resort that you can borrow.
Over the years, several beachside restaurants and villas have appeared, and although it is now more accessible, it is still not overly crowded is clean and well maintained.
There is plenty of room to throw down a towel and relax under a palm tree with beautiful views of the pristine bay ahead.
Snorkeling is a real highlight here for me.The waters are shallow and clear when you enter, with vibrant coral reefs just off shore where you’ll find lots of fish and maybe even a few baby sharks.
Snorkeling in Aow Leuk Bay
Aow Leuk Bay is one of my favorite snorkeling spots on Koh Tao.Although the coral is a little bleached closer to shore, as the water drops out a little deeper, it comes alive.
After exploring the area, my tip for snorkeling would be to follow the rocky shore to Moondance Magic. The water is shallow near the rocks, but it tapers off a bit as you swim further out lives, a few baby sharks and even passing turtles.
Where to go after visiting Aow Leuk Bay?
After enjoying Aow Leuk, head back to explore Lang Khai Bay.This quiet, rocky bay is ideal for those looking to escape the crowds and is a fantastic spot for snorkelling.
But if you’re looking for more excitement, my top pick on this side of the island is Tanote Bay. It has a big rock right in the middle of the bay, which is perfect for cliff jumping. Plus, the snorkeling here is even better than Aow Leuk. Whom, with just as easy access and no entry fee.
Hint: If the wind blows from the west, I recommend visiting Sai Nuan Beach, Ta Thong or Chalok instead.
Can you stay at Aow Leuk?
Yes, you can stay in Aow Leuk Bay itself, making it a quieter alternative to busier areas like Sairee. It’s a great choice for families or those looking for a quieter base on Koh Tao.
There are two main options here: Aow Leuk Grand Hill and Chabalay Resort. While they may not be the most luxurious resorts on the island, both offer comfortable stays and direct access to the beach with great views of the bay.
If you’re looking for something a little more unique nearby, Moondance Magic View is a fantastic option. Known for its cliffside location, the laid-back vibe, Moondance is a very laid-back choice , which allows access to this quieter side of the island while keeping you close to Aow Leuk.
Alternative accommodation in Koh Tao
If you’re wondering where to stay on Koh Tao and want to be close to the main activities and beaches, choose a stay near Sairee Beach.
However, other great options include Mae Haad, or for a more secluded atmosphere, check out the southern beaches or even the east coast around Tanote Bay. Below are my top picks.
1. Jamakhiri Resort & Spa Luxury
A wonderful luxury dive resort in a quiet and secluded location on the beach of Shark Bay, away from the hustle and bustle.
2. Fandara Pool Villas Medium range
A luxury villa option for those who want their own kitchen and pool.Located on the hill to Wooden Rock Viewpoint.
3. Summer guest house Budget:
Located within walking distance of the dive shops and pubs on Saire Beach, this is the cheapest hostel option with a great atmosphere.
