Recent heavy rains in much of the country have closed some campsites and gravel roads in the Kruger National Park (KNP).
Some major roads between Skukuza and Lower Sabie were damaged but the KNP Roads Management team moved quickly to ensure the safety of users including tourists.
South African National Parks (SANParks) said flooding was mainly localized south of the Olifants River, but all gates were open and operational.
Flood forecasts suggest that the Sabi and Sand rivers will be inundated with heavy flows for some time.Rain has also been heavy in the north, with the Luvuvhu River at its highest level this season.
Roads in the area are also being monitored and road users have been asked to watch for road closures.
SANParks said the KNP Disaster Management Team has also been mobilized to attend to potential emergencies.
“So far, there have been no reports of casualties or damage to personal property. However, road users are advised to be extra alert and cautious when crossing low-level bridges and not leave their vehicles to remove debris,” a SANParks spokesperson said.
Operators and visitors are urged to contact emergency personnel to assist where possible and are advised to check with their respective holiday camp reception desks regarding updated road closures and alternative routes.
The disaster management team will provide regular updates to enable visitors and tourists to plan their travels accordingly. Those with internet access should pay attention to the latest online updates on road conditions in the south of the park.
Tourists with confirmed bookings for various campsites should check availability bookings or contact the emergency center on (013) 735 4325.
